SUMMARY:VITALY: AN EVENING OF WONDERS - Imagination Meets Reality
DESCRIPTION:Combining breathtaking visuals with Vitaly’s captivating style\, An Evening of Wonders is an interactive theatrical experience that takes audiences on a magical journey. Along the way\, Vitaly blends art and illusion to illustrate the story of his transformation from a boy with a dream to a man with a vision—the vision of a world where the rules of reality do not exist. In this world paintings spring to life\, photographs become mini-movies\, and audience members see their faces vanish from their own driver’s licenses. Even time itself reverses as bare broken branches visibly repair and renew themselves with the green leaves of spring. \nGrowing up in Israel\, Vitaly was just 14 when he discovered his passion for magic. Soon he was developing his own material\, entertaining his friends and family. He has since earned a reputation as one of the most unique and innovative illusionists in the world. One of the only magicians to stump Penn & Teller\, Vitaly recently followed in their footsteps with a run at the Westside Theater on Broadway. \nFeaturing some of the most original illusions ever witnessed—many of which touch on tender topics such as love\, loss\, and growing old—Vitaly’s An Evening of Wonders does more than entertain. It moves\, inspires\, and instills within all who experience it a fresh perspective on life and a greater realization that ours is a world of beauty and wonder.

SUMMARY:SUBDUDES - Acoustic Roots Rock
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of 25 years and ten albums\, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music\, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics\, soulful R&B swagger\, easy vocal harmonies\, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any five musicians. \nLed by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist\, John Magnie\, The Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans. The band is notable for the substitution of a tambourine player\, Steve Amedée\, for a drummer and Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass. An intoxicating blend of passionate\, joyous roots music\, this is more than just a concert – the “dudes” leave you feeling like they’re having a party and you were lucky enough to be invited.

SUMMARY:BODEANS - All American Roots Rock
DESCRIPTION:Those who have followed the BoDeans’ remarkable 30-year musical career know it is their blend of compelling songs and high energy performances that has kept loyal fans’ close. Best known for their catchy single\, “Closer To Free\,” the band’s accessible adult alternative sound on such chart-topping hits as Fadeaway\,” “Only Love\,” and “Dreams\,” won them Rolling Stone‘s readers’ poll for Best New American Band in 1987. \nTheir 12 studio albums are filled with radio singles that have defined a generation including “Good Things\,” “You Don’t Get Much\,” “Idaho\,” “If It Makes You\,” “Stay\,” “American\,” and “All the World.” While few would expect the BoDeans to still be going strong\, they remain one of the few bands that have survived the ups and downs of the industry\, staying true to their sound and style and showing no signs of slowing down.

SUMMARY:TODD SNIDER WITH VERY SPECIAL GUEST RAMBLIN’ JACK ELLIOTT
DESCRIPTION:Todd Snider has been described by Premier Guitar magazine as “the closest thing we have to Johnny Cash these days” and Cash himself was known to welcome his “good buddy” Ramblin’ Jack Elliott up on stage. Now the Cash connections line up as Snider and Elliott share the stage for a rollicking evening of good music and good times. \nTodd Snider has journeyed across musical genres – from his early folk and Americana roots\, he took bluegrass and blues through the alt-rock era\, leaving his own distinctive stamp on each. His most recent album “Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3\,” recorded at Cash’s own studio\, brings him full circle showcasing his acoustic style and the wry wit of his songwriting. \nConsidered one of the last true links to America’s folk music tradition\, Elliott’s guitar virtuosity and irresistible storytelling spans his wide-ranging repertoire. He became immersed in the folk music of his lifelong friend and mentor\, Woodie Guthrie\, caught the blues from Leadbelly and other giants of the era\, and his own creativity has made him an inspiration for a generation of musicians. He received the National Medal of the Arts in 1998. \nModern-day American troubadours with roots across the musical spectrum\, both Snider and Elliott bring a genuine love for sharing their music that reaches audiences wherever they go. \nCash Cabin Sessions\, Vol. 3 Todd Snider \nOne morning near the end of August\, Todd Snider was relaxing with a visitor on the back porch of his house just outside Nashville\, drinking coffee and shooting the breeze while his dog\, Cowboy Jim\, took a nap nearby. After awhile\, Snider said to his guest\, “I’ve got an album’s worth of songs\, and I think the songs are telling me to make a folk record.” \nThis was a surprising bit of news considering he had spent the last six years making rock albums of one kind or another. But Snider was feeling as if he had “maybe drifted too far from the shore.” He was feeling the pull to start over\, to go back to what he was doing when he first began\, to return to his roots as a folksinger. \nIf Snider needed any further evidence that was the direction he should pursue\, he got it a half hour later. Back inside his home office\, he checked his email and had one from his manager informing him he had just received an offer to play the 2019 Newport Folk Festival\, an event he had never done. \nSnider mentioned he had been listening to Woody Guthrie’s Library of Congress Recordings\, then crossed the room to the turntable and put the needle down on side one of the record. “Woody Guthrie sometimes gets me reset on why you do a song\, instead of how\,” Snider explains of the man who has long been a touchstone for him. “When I was young\, there was something about him that made me want to do it. So once or twice a year\, I’ll go back to him\, I’ll go back to the source.” \nGuthrie famously had the words “This machine kills fascists” printed on his guitar\, and on several of the songs on Snider’s new album\, Cash Cabin Sessions\, Vol. 3\, he squarely aims his guitar at the creeping fascism he sees in America. He had been wanting to make a political record since 2016\, and although only half the songs lean in that direction\, there is one constant throughout the album: a man\, his guitar\, and the truth.

SUMMARY:OAKLAND BALLET: LUNA MEXICANA - Celebrating Dia de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Spirited dance\, lively music and colorful costumes help celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in this festive\, family-friendly show created by artistic director Graham Lustig. An exhilarating array of dances light up the stage including Lustig’s “Luna Mexicana” ballet which highlights the traditions surrounding Dia de los Muertos\, as well as the return of “Viva la Vida\,” a collaboration between Lustig and Martin Romero\, artistic director of Ballet Folklórico México Danza. “Viva la Vida!” honors the life and singular vision of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with a striking visual energy that draws on her love for animals and the passionate\, bright colors that animate her work. Mexican contemporary and folkloric dance works performed by Ballet Folklorico\, as well as Nahui Ehekatl & Co. Aztec dance company\, complete a joyful celebration for all ages. \nAbout Dia de los Muertos: Celebrated on the first two days of November every year\, Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican celebration that brings families together as they welcome the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion in the real world. Although the symbols of the holiday feature skeletons and skulls\, and there are costumes and parades\, Dia de los Muertos is not a Mexican Halloween. Instead the celebration honors traditions that derive from early Aztec beliefs. On that date\, the border between the spirit world and the real world was believed to be dissolved and the souls of the dead would awaken and return to the living world to feast\, drink\, dance and play music with loved ones. The colorful and lively celebration has evolved to include fancy costumes\, intricate paper decorations\, and the tradition of leaving food or other offerings on graves or on small altars called ofrendas.

SUMMARY:GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA - The Greatest Band of the Greatest Generation
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1938\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra delivered a big band magic that soon took the nation by storm. Built around melodies played by the clarinet and tenor saxophone\, Miller’s arrangements established a unique style and sound that broke away from the rest of the big band groups at the time. They scored one of their biggest hits “Moonlight Serenade” that first year\, followed by “In the Mood” and “Little Brown Jug\,” and by 1940 the Glenn Miller Orchestra had topped the charts a record eight times in a single year. “Tuxedo Junction”\, “Pennsylvania 6-5000”\, “Chattanooga Choo Choo”\, “A String of Pearls”\, “At Last”\, and “(I’ve Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo” became the soundtrack of an era and have continued to appear in pop culture ever since. \nAlthough his remarkable career was cut short when his plane disappeared during WWII\, Glenn Miller brought swing music to new heights and his work had a lasting impact on the musical world. Led by Nick Hilscher with guest vocalist Maria Schafer\, an evening with the Glenn Miller Orchestra enchants audiences with the timeless swing sound. \n“Quickly established the energy and spirit that made for a lively show” – Portland Press Herald \n“Transported the audience back to the 1940s\, playing Miller’s hit tunes in the well-preserved sound of the orchestra’s heyday.” — Saco River Theater
