Love MORE this Valentine’s Day

Published On: January 31, 2024By

Either you LOVE it or you don’t. Most people want to “love more” on Valentine’s Day while others feel the commercialization of the day degrades the experience they hope to create. Whatever your opinion on the matter, we see it as an opportunity to spread more love in our community and beyond. And we have a few (or 14 to be exact) ways you can do that with us, but first let’s take a look at how this holiday may have originated.

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is shrouded in legend and history, with its origins steeped in both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. The day is named after St. Valentine, a mysterious figure who is often associated with romantic love thanks to the various myths associated with him, all suggestive of his sympathetic, heroic, and—most importantly—romantic character.

One legend has it that Valentine was a priest in third-century Rome who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage for young soldiers, secretly performing weddings for young lovers instead. When his defiance was discovered, Valentine was martyred. Another suggests he helped Christians escape the harsh Roman prisons.

Over time, mid-February was associated with love and fertility, in part due to the pagan festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated at this time. By the Middle Ages, Valentine became one of the most popular saints in England and France, and by the 18th century, exchanging tokens of affection or handwritten notes became commonplace.

Today, Valentine’s Day has evolved into a global celebration where people express love and affection through the exchange of cards, chocolates, flowers, and other tokens of affection. We see it as an opportunity to spread love in our community by doing simple things that show others we care. It was also 6 years ago, mid-February when we first launched the Love Livermore group as an initiative to create a greater sense of connection, and to become a resource for Livermorons, Livermorians, and all lovers of Livermore.

So help us celebrate Love Livermore’s 6th Anniversary (and Valentine’s Day) for 14 days! Starting February 1st, we will focus on one simple way to spread or share love each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. Let’s love more together and contribute to the connection and good vibes found here in Livermore.

14 Days & 14 Ways to LOVE MORE:

  • FEBRUARY 1: LISTEN – Make a real effort to listen to everyone you encounter today. Put your phone down, and listen with your ears, eyes, and heart.

  • FEBRUARY 2: ADMIRE – Who inspires you? Oftentimes we don’t tell the people who inspire us most how they make us feel. Do that by sending this person a message or text. Or better yet, mail them a card or letter.

  • FEBRUARY 3: SMILE – It doesn’t get simpler than that. Smile more at home today and throughout your day…at those you know and have never met.

  • FEBRUARY 4: ACKNOWLEDGE – Wave at city workers, first responders, and the people working hard to make our City of Livermore safe and awesome.

  • FEBRUARY 5: EMPATHIZE – Do you know someone going through a tough time…personally or professionally? Ask them about it, comfort them without judgment, and give them a hug.

  • FEBRUARY 6: COMPLIMENT – I love your style! That’s a beautiful dress. You have a nice smile. Thank you for your hard work. Compliment at least 5 people throughout your day.

  • FEBRUARY 7: SHARE – Have you read a great book lately? Maybe you started streaming a new series you enjoy. Share something you are passionate about with others.

  • FEBRUARY 8: APPRECIATE – We live in an incredible city. From our parks and trails, to our local businesses and the people we encounter everyday. Focus on being grateful for where we live and appreciate the beautiful people and places you encounter today. Watch the sunrise or sunset. Make a list of 3 things you are grateful for at the end of the day.

  • FEBRUARY 9: GIVE – Give your time to help a friend, family member, neighbor, volunteer somewhere, or donate clothes or other items. Or maybe you just take some extra time today to do some needed chores around the house.

  • FEBRUARY 10: ENCOURAGE – Encourage your child or a friend to pursue their passion or something they have been trying to accomplish. Be someone’s cheerleader or source of motivation today.

  • FEBRUARY 11: SUPPORT – Shop or visit a local business today or support this business by sharing it in social media or by giving a positive online review.

  • FEBRUARY 12: COOK – Make a homemade meal for your family or neighbor. Bake or take a sweet surprise to someone special.

  • FEBRUARY 13: GATHER – Organize a night on the town or coffee with friends…or a clean-up with neighbors. Get together and create magic with others.

  • FEBRUARY 14: GIFT – Acts of kindness all day long! Be a gift to others by performing random acts of kindness and love. Start your day by gifting yourself some self-care or just loving yourself a little more. Then share your love and kindness with others today!

Thank you for choosing to LOVE MORE with us. Our goal with this challenge was to foster love and respect for others in our community. Respect is a feeling or expression of admiration and consideration toward someone or something due to their qualities, abilities, achievements, or worth. It involves treating others with kindness, courtesy, and civility. It means we acknowledge their rights, views, and feelings, even when they differ from your own. In essence, respect means recognizing the inherent value in others and honoring their individuality.

We love you Livermore and you make us proud!

xoxo
